EU-Malaysia Business Day 2025: Penang in Focus

Penang has been steadily building its industrial excellence and technical expertise in Electrical & Electronics (E&E), Advanced Manufacturing, and Medical Technology for over 50 years. Today, around half of Malaysia’s total manufacturing foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to Penang. EU-based companies remain among the top three FDI contributors, reinforcing the region's strong commercial ties with Europe.

Penang has ambitious plans to attract cutting-edge technology providers while simultaneously investing in infrastructure projects to become a sustainable and green manufacturing hub. With a focus on innovation and environmental responsibility, the region is positioning itself as a key player in the global high-tech ecosystem.

Opportunities for Danish Companies

For Danish companies specializing in high tech solutions, automation, robotics, medical devices, sustainable manufacturing and also food processing, Penang offers exciting opportunities. With a strong talent pool, well established supply chains, and a pro-business environment, it serves as both a manufacturing base and a gateway to the Asia-Pacific market.

Denmark’s strengths in green technology, energy efficiency, and advanced industrial solutions align well with Penang’s vision of becoming a sustainable and innovation-driven hub. There is significant potential for collaboration in areas such as smart manufacturing, energy-efficient production, and circular economy initiatives.

Strengthening European Union and Penang Commercial Ties

Together with the European Union (EU) missions, The Royal Danish Embassy participated in the EU-Malaysia Business Day 2025, celebrating the robust commercial partnerships between the EU and Penang. Organized by the European Chamber of Commerce in Malaysia, InvestPenang, the investment promotion agency for the state, and the Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia, the event provided valuable networking opportunities, helping Danish businesses connect with key stakeholders, explore investment prospects, and expand their presence in Malaysia and beyond.

Breakout sessions covered key industries, including Electrical and Electronics (E&E) Manufacturing, Healthcare & Medical Devices, and Education & Upskilling, along with Sustainable Supply Chains, Renewable Energy, and Cybersecurity in the Digital Economy.

Industry and Sustainability in Action

During the state visit to Penang, we had the privilege of witnessing innovative sustainable manufacturing practices firsthand:

  • Factory in the Forest: A prime example of how sustainability and industrial excellence can go hand in hand. These manufacturing facilities are designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize power consumption, adapting intelligently to Malaysia’s tropical climate.

  • ViTrox Technologies: A leader in semiconductor technology for medical device assembly, showcasing automation, precision engineering, and cutting-edge manufacturing processes.

  • Plastic Odyssey: An inspiring project born from the efforts of a young, idealistic team, tackling plastic waste by turning it into valuable resources and promoting circular economy solutions.

Deepening Collaboration in Education & Research

Education and research are key drivers of innovation. Our visit to Penang Institute, one of Malaysia's major public policy think tanks and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) reinforced the commitment to academic collaboration:

  • At Penang Institute, Dato’ Dr. Ooi Kee Beng provided valuable insights into Penang’s evolving role in international trade, economic shifts in a multipolar world and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

  • At USM, discussions with Prof. Dr. Azlan Amran focused on research partnerships, student mobility, and advancements in technology and social sciences.

Strengthening academic exchanges between European and Malaysian institutions remains a priority for fostering talent development and innovation. When industry and academia collaborate, knowledge-sharing and technological progress thrive.

A Strategic Foothold in the Asia-Pacific

Penang continues to set the standard for sustainable manufacturing and high-tech innovation, making it an attractive destination for forward-thinking companies. With its strong industrial base, commitment to sustainability, and investment-friendly environment, the region offers a solid foundation for future collaboration and a strategic foothold in the Asia-Pacific region for Danish companies.
